In this post, I’m going to share with you the 3 of the best adaptogens for adrenal fatigue and how you can incorporate them into your daily life.
It’s very simple and affordable, and a no-brainer if you find yourself particularly stressed out or anxious due to adrenal fatigue.
Before we get to the adaptogens, let me quickly go over what adrenal fatigue is exactly.
What is adrenal fatigue?
Situated above each kidney, the adrenal glands are responsible for secreting hormones that are essential for a healthy body and mind.
When your body experiences chronic, long-term stress and the adrenals become overburdened from releasing too much of these hormones, too frequently.
Hormones such as:
- Cortisol: the body’s stress hormone and defense mechanism, also leads to weight gain
- Epinephrine: the hormone responsible for that fight or flight response to triggers
- Aldosterone: responsible for maintaining healthy blood pressure levels
Frequent release of these hormones contributes to typical anxiety and stress symptoms from an upset stomach to dizziness to drastic mood swings.
A healthy lifestyle, including a clean diet, regular exercise, and proper stress management are all essential for supporting the adrenals.
However, long-term, chronic stress can take a real toll and when you’re completely burnt out, a little extra support in the way of adaptogens is a great idea!
How adaptogens help support the adrenals
We exercise to improve our muscles and stamina, think of adaptogens as helping to improve and support your adrenals.
Adaptogens help the body better manage stress by boosting your tolerance to mental and emotional stress.
Adaptogens are non-toxic, non-habit-forming herbs and plant-sourced actives that are completely safe and everyone can benefit from them!
There are tons of adaptogens you can benefit from, and I’ll touch on many more of them in the future.
For now, here are just three I’ve been loving lately.
Turmeric:
A powerful adaptogen and it’s so affordable! Be sure to add a pinch of black pepper to enhance absorption. I add it to savory meals (I’ll be sharing my favorite “cheesy” pasta recipe soon which includes turmeric!) but I usually make a turmeric cocoa latte with it before bed!
Tulsi tea:
I drink Tulsi (Holy Basil) at least once per day as I knew it was great for anxiety, but it wasn’t until recently that I learned it is a super-powerful adaptogen too. The flavor is quite distinct but sipping it really helps me to feel comforted and definitely calmer.
Chaga tea:
The common mushrooms you’ll find in adaptogen blends are Reishi and Cordyceps, but Chaga has powerful adaptogenic properties too and lucky for me. It has a very slight earthy taste (honestly, it doesn’t even taste like anything to me) and apart from helping the body deal with stress.
Want to try an adaptogen drink blended for you (my personal favourite)?
If you’re like me, sometimes it’s just easier knowing you can take a scoop and get your fill of adaptogens for the day.
There are many adaptogen blend powders available these days, but the brand I use consistently is Organifi.
Their range of drink powders (cold and warm) include the following adaptogens and so much more to help with your anxiety and overall health and wellbeing:
- Ashwaganda
- Reishi
- Cordyceps
- Ginseng
- Tulsi
- Gynostemma
- Amla
- Schisandra
- Turmeric
- Ginger
- Black pepper (helps with turmeric absorption)
I am especially a fan of the Gold blend because it’s helped me so much with sleep-related problems I usually have due to anxiety… like waking up a million times a night!
