For the past few years, week after week, I’ve sent out a letter every Monday morning.
I send these letters to your inbox with love and hope that you’ll be able to resonate in some way and take something from it with you into your own life.
I’m creating an e-book filled with my favourite letters, words to revisit whenever you need a quiet moment or a gentle reminder.
These letters are designed to ground you, help you feel seen and heard, as well as encourage you on days when it all just feels impossible.
I’ll let you know as soon as it’s ready, but wanted to share one of my favourites in the meantime
I want you to put any worries aside for just a while, and I’d like to guide you on a little walk today. May this letter give you permission to do just that <3
You’re at the edge of a forest, with a path spread out before you, but it’s your path and you’re completely safe.
Take a moment to take a deep breath and feel that feeling of calm and safety settle into your bones as you survey your surroundings.
Everything feels like it is paused and you feel this deep sense of relief.
You start heading into the forest, not knowing where exactly you are headed, but intuitively knowing you’ll get to where you need to go.
The path ahead of you is dappled with sunlight that flickers as sunbeams dance through the trees, and you breathe in the refreshing, crisp air, still ripe with the scent of a recent rainfall.
The sun warms your skin as you walk and you soak it in, stopping every few steps to feel into all of your senses.
You hear the birdsong high above you and the trees rustling as the wind gently caresses their leaves.
You smell earthy richness that you wish you could bottle up and take out whenever you need to ground yourself back into the present.
Your mind immediately clears again, seemingly unable to hold onto any thoughts that exist outside of this magical space.
The presence of trees all around you, with their visible, sturdy trunks and extensive root system that you can’t see, but can somehow feel the energy beneath your feet, brings you a sense of comfort that feels like a warm hug.
Their ancient wisdom echoes in your every step, as a reminder that presence is all that matters.
This moment is all that matters.
You feel the soft earth beneath your feet and you instinctively reach out to touch a tree covered in moss that is velvety soft to the touch.
You keep moving forward, every sense heightened as you take in this beautiful place.
The path veers off slightly to the right, and suddenly you are faced with something completely unexpected; a huge boulder looms before you, blocking your path.
You don’t feel scared, but you certainly feel a sense of frustration, as you were eager to get to where you were going, despite not even knowing where that was just yet.
There’s no way around this thing and it’s too big to climb.
You find a rock to sit on as you ponder this unexpected problem.
You take slow, deep breaths, still enjoying the sense of calm, of peace from being out in nature.
You consider turning around and heading home, but then the bright glint of sunlight, on something that looks like metal, catches your eye and you move closer to investigate.
There, on the lush forest floor, under the shade of a maple tree, is a toolbox.
Only you know the colour so whatever colour comes into your mind now is the right one.
You open it up to find an array of tools that may or not be familiar to you, and immediately you just know that these tools are here to help you chip away at this boulder.
You suck in a breath as you take in this giant hunk of rock from up close and wonder how on earth you’re going to get through it.
You’ve realized that going around or over are not options so the only other option is through.
And these tools are here to help.
You need another moment to rest, reflect and weigh your options.
And so you head back to your rock.
You know you’ll never get through this all today, in fact, it could take far longer than you’d like to really even think about.
But there’s this feeling in you that you can’t ignore; it’s urging you to start.
This boulder, my beautiful friend, represents your trauma, your anxiety, your triggers, your depression and anything else that weighs you down and blocks you from moving forward.
You know that there’s something amazing for you on the other side of this, and this unyielding belief drives you to pick up a chisel and you decide to spend just a few minutes chiseling away.
You stand back to survey your handiwork.
Even though the boulder looks pretty much the same as before, you can see a small area that has been chiseled away and you feel a sense of pride for even that small bit of progress.
You pack your tools up and leave it under the safety of the maple tree and you say out loud that you’ll be back.
Maybe not the next day or the day after that, but you’ll be back. You know you will.
One day you manage to chisel enough of the solid rock away to reveal a small opening.
You look through it and feel tears roll down your cheeks, as emotions bubble up and you glimpse that beautiful path on the other side; your future.
You feel like you’ve done enough for today and so you sit on your rock, the one that’s now quite worn and feels like the familiarity of a favourite armchair, and you let the light seep in through the crack.
You take a moment to appreciate the progress you have made.
You take a moment to honour how far you have come despite there being so much of the boulder left.
You’re not even on the other side yet, but that’s okay.
You know it’s a process, but moments like these make all that sweating, all that chiseling away, all that frustration and all those tears… yes, moments like these make it worth it.
So next time you feel stuck, you feel like you’ve made no progress, take a moment to let the light seep in.
Leave your boulder and go home to rest and head back out when it feels right, as only you will know when.
Pick up your chisel and get to work.
It’s not going to be done in one day.
But appreciate the beauty around you while you chisel away, little bit by little bit.
Take breaks and rest and give yourself credit for your hard work.
There’s beauty on the other side of what you may be facing, but there’s beauty on this side too, should you choose to find it.
You’re doing so much better than you thought and you are not stuck.
